The Camera Is Not the Product — The Data Is
A common misconception in the professional virtual tour market is that any 360° camera can deliver a Matterport-equivalent result. This misunderstanding has led many businesses to commission virtual tours that look superficially similar to a Matterport experience — but which fundamentally lack the spatial data, accuracy, and post-production export capability that define professional-grade 3D capture.
Understanding the difference is not a matter of brand preference. It is a matter of understanding what the technology is actually doing — and what outputs it is capable of producing.
How Consumer 360° Cameras Work
Consumer 360° cameras — including Ricoh Theta, Insta360, and similar devices — capture photographic imagery across a full spherical field of view using two wide-angle lenses. The result is a panoramic photograph that can be viewed interactively by dragging the perspective.
What consumer 360° cameras measure: Nothing. They capture light, not geometry. A standard 360° tour is a sequence of linked spherical photographs — a photographic experience without any underlying spatial data.
Practical consequences:
- No accurate dimensions — measurements are estimated or impossible
- No point cloud data — no MatterPak export possible
- No BIM derivation — geometry must be manually modelled from photographs
- No schematic floor plans — must be hand-drawn or approximated
- Navigation is limited to the positions at which photographs were taken
- Spatial quality degrades significantly in challenging lighting conditions
How the Matterport Pro3 Works
The Matterport Pro3 uses a hybrid LiDAR and photogrammetry system — combining two fundamentally different measurement technologies in a single capture:
LiDAR (Light Detection and Ranging)
The Pro3's LiDAR sensor fires rapid pulses of near-infrared laser light in every direction and precisely measures the time-of-flight return of each pulse. Because the speed of light is constant, the return time directly encodes the distance to every surface in the room — with an accuracy of within 1% of true dimensions.
The output is a point cloud — a dense, three-dimensional array of measurement points that defines the exact geometry of every surface in the scanned space. This point cloud is the foundation for:
- MatterPak XYZ exports
- Schematic floor plan generation
- BIM file production
- Accurate dimension measurement within the Matterport platform
Photogrammetry
Simultaneously, the Pro3 captures high-resolution photographic imagery across its full field of view. This photographic data is projected onto the LiDAR point cloud to produce a colourised, textured 3D model — combining geometric accuracy with photographic visual quality.
The result is an experience that is simultaneously:
- Dimensionally accurate — to within 1% of reality
- Visually photorealistic — navigable as a fully immersive environment
- Data-rich — exportable in multiple professional formats for downstream professional workflows
The Pro3's Outdoor Capability
A significant advancement of the Pro3 over earlier Matterport cameras is its outdoor scanning capability. Previous Matterport hardware was optimised for interior environments and struggled with:
- Bright, variable outdoor lighting conditions
- Long-range scan distances beyond interior room depths
- Dynamic elements (moving people, vehicles, vegetation)
The Pro3's enhanced LiDAR range (up to 20 metres) and improved HDR imaging pipeline make it the first Matterport camera capable of reliable outdoor capture — opening professional applications in:
- Exterior architectural documentation
- Yacht deck and marina scanning
- Hotel pool terrace and garden space capture
- Construction site documentation
- Event venue exterior mapping
Why This Matters for 360INT Clients
At 360INT, every project is captured using professional-grade Matterport hardware — not consumer 360° cameras. This is not simply a quality preference. It is a technical requirement for the deliverables our clients need:
- Accurate dimensions for hotel sales kits, event planning, and venue marketing
- MatterPak exports for architecture and interior design clients
- BIM files for renovation and construction projects
- Schematic floor plans for real estate and property marketing
- Integration with professional AEC software via the Autodesk plugin ecosystem
When a client asks "can't we just use a cheaper camera?", the honest answer is: you can create a photographic experience — but not a spatial data asset. And increasingly, for the clients and industries we serve, the spatial data is the point.
